American Civil War Monuments
Sturbridge, Massachusetts
Soldier's Monument
Built 1871
rededicated 2002
Erected by the Town
This very simple monument stands in the Commons of Sturbridge, Mass. The sentiment
is simple; it's a Soldier's Monument. No lists of battles or lofty sentiments,
just the names of soldiers from the area, members of different regiments, now
carved on the sides. And it was erected not by a generous donor, or the state,
and no name gets credit, but simply by the town to honor their own.
